Gesäuse Mountains-Alps

The Gesäuse has the highest density of mountain huts in the northern Alpine arc.

Hesshütte 1.699 m

  • From Johnsbach/GH Kölbl via Normalsteig past the Jagahoferalm approx. 3 hours

    originally from Hartelsgraben via Handhabenriegelweg and Wolfbaueralm (abandoned), walking time approx. 5 hours (no longer marked!)
    We slowly descended to the Wolfbauern-Alpe, which we reached around 9 a.m., and spent the night there. The next day, a steep, rocky path led us down to the Hartelsgraben bridge in the Ennsthal valley.
    (Wilhelm Schleicher: From the Upper Styrian Alps. Jahrbuch des Österr. Alpenvereins 1867, p. 38.) In Hess, Special-Führer durch das Gesäuse, 1884, this manual climb was still recommended as the normal route from Hieflau to the Hoch-Zinödl in 4 ½ hours.

  • From the parking lot on the Gesäuse main road between Johnsbachtal and Gstatterboden (near the Zigeunerbrücke tunnel) via the normal route approx. 1 1/2 hours
  • From the Gesäuse main road (parking lot Weidendom / near GH Bachbrücke) approx. 2 km in the direction of Johnsbach along the “Wilden-John-Weg”, then via Gsengscharte (path no. 658) walking time approx. 2 1/2 hours, return via normal path and along the cycle path (bypass tunnel Zigeunerbrücke) back to the starting point.
